Is This AI's GUI Moment?
The ongoing evolution of AI interfaces from (_______) chat boxes to more interactive and visual tools, highlighted by recent releases like Notion's animated AI assistant and OpenAI's Canvas editing tool, may remind us of the shift from Command-Line Interfaces to Graphical User Interfaces almost exactly 40 years ago. Is this AI's GUI moment?
In this 3rd post on AI user interfaces, I'll detail the key elements that make AI interactions less intimidating and more accessible for non-technical users, and more powerful for regular ones.
- Direct manipulation: To encourage direct and granular manipulation of the output, we need to explore more interactive controls such as sliders and contextual buttons, exemplified by OpenAI's new Canvas picker controls.
- Visual feedback: Immediate visual responses will enhance interaction intuitiveness and trust. Canvas' animated text selection is a simple example.
- Omnipresence: Users expect a seamless integration of tools and features across their platforms.
Notion's AI assistant pastille floating on every page makes AI more familiar, and relatable.
- Visual appeal: Tech need not be ugly! Unique and even artistic designs will encourage more interactions. How cute is Nosy, Notion's New Yorker-style animated AI doodle face?
Then, as AI companies continue to explore ways to further empower users, the focus will expand towards these research areas:
- Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI): Systems that learn from user behaviors, enhancing relevance through personalization.
- Generative UI: Interfaces that proactively generate options based on user inputs, anticipating needs, and allowing ever granular refinement.
- Multi-modality: Systems that blend inputs like text, voice, and gestures to create richer interactions.
Things are accelerating. Blink and your favorite tool has launched an update or a new interaction model. As we move from static chat-based AI to more interactive interfaces, let's stay focused on accessibility, intuitiveness, and user empowerment.
